Youth Football - The Hay is in the Barn
The Hay is in the Barn- In Youth Football Terms Here in the Midwest there is a term we use quite often to describe when we have finished up a task and there isn't a whole lot more to do or worry about. The phrase is "The Hay is in the Barn". It means just that, the hay has been cut, been baled and has been put up in a nice dry barn for later use. There isn't much that can be done to improve the hay at this point, what's done is done, the only thing left to do is bring it out of the barn when it's needed for feed. Youth football is a lot like that. Come game day, what's done is done. Your preparation to this point in time determines how well your team is going to do. Very few games come down to...

Please notice I said you and your child. YOU MUST be involved in this process. How you treat your child, how you react to them, the tone of voice you use, the words you say, how you nurture and support them is the most important thing you do for your child. Your child cannot change in your family system if you keep doing everything the way you have always done it. You will need support in ways to best help your child succeed. A therapist who specializes in ADHD can help you understand what your child is going through and help you identify...
Practitioners are often surprised and incredulous when they find that proven programs advise an identical approach to the needs of many children. Surely the subtle differences between cases call for a unique prescription? They suspect that programs must have been designed in a tidy theoretical world where children fit into neat categories. But out in the "real world" this must be a gross oversimplification. Children often suffer from several disorders at the same time. In truth, most program designers know the complexities only too well. Writing in the Journal of Children's Services, Carolyn Webster-Stratton, creator of The Incredible Year, points out, for example, that children referred to mental...

The Baby Who Never Sleeps
It wasn't until I began surviving on two or three hours of sleep a night that I began to understand how child abuse happens. Prior to having children, nothing could have been more alien to me than the notion that anyone would even consider harming a child. But a few months into parenthood, having never had gotten more than a few hours of sleep at a stretch, I remember curling up in a fetal position on my bed listening to my inconsolable baby screaming in the next room. Oh, I would have given my left arm (and I'm left-handed, mind you), for maybe five or six hours of silence. Five or six hours of sleep. Fortunately, I'm a relatively stable person. Even bleary-eyed and on the brink of madness, I had...

Sales: I Don't Know What To Do-Guess I'll Call Steve
I knew the first time I met him that he was just out to get my business. After all he was a salesman. That's what his card said, that's what his job was, and that's what he did for a living. I don't trust salesmen, and I bet a lot of the people who read this don't either. It's not surprising, I guess. There are a lot of salespeople in the world who will do or say almost anything to get a sale, and a lot of times the things they say are lies or half truths, and the things they do are deceptive and deceiving. Just like a lot of other things in life, it only takes getting burned a couple of times to make you distrust all of their ilk. (C'mon, who uses "ilk" anymore?) I was a federal purchasing...
Most Underrated Television Shows
Here is a quick list of some of the most critically underrated television shows of the past decade. Critical approval and ratings often don’t go hand in hand but these shows deserve/deserved both. Pull up a bar stool, a cold drink and dig in with these great shows. The Shield Critics praised this gritty police drama but very few non-critics talk about how great it was. Maybe it gets lost in the praise for another police drama from the period, “The Wire.” Nevertheless, “The Shield” and especially Michael Chiklis deserve all the praise they get, and more, for bringing realness and sympathy to often unsympathetic and undeserving characters. Over seven seasons “The Shield” just got more...

Picking Up the Pieces For Children of Divorce
[9:00 AM] The step-mother shrugs as she is backing out of my office, apparently resigning her duties for the hour to me, the child's counselor. Briefly observing the girl for a moment to gauge her status; I notice that the eleven-year old, slumped down in her seat, will not return my look. I can't recognize if she has any more bandages over her wrists, hands or neck since last week. She might be cutting herself in the same places. Or, she may have finally found a better way to vent her anger. [1:30 PM] I wonder if this is becoming a pointless exercise. Every time the mother leaves her five year-old daughter with me, the girl simply throws a fit- -just like this! They must hear her crying throughout...
Overwhelmed and Overworked: The Myth of American Productivity
Employment finally seemed back on track during the first few months of 2004. Politicians crowed that "Our tax cuts are working." Then, without warning, job growth slowed to a crawl, resulting in a deficit of more than 2 million jobs from that confidently predicted only a year ago. To counteract that dismal performance, public emphasis turned to another indicator, productivity. The reported increases in American productivity are quite genuine. Individual worker output collectively rose, from 2000 to 2003, by a full 12 percent. Definitely a bonus for Wall Street - but what about Main Street? As the meticulous research of the Economic Policy Institute shows (Snapshot, 09/08/04), real family income fell...
